Dong Open Air's hilltop location changes the packing and travel equation. Getting to the parking area is not the same as getting your tent to the campsite. Plan the ascent, luggage and return downhill before choosing between camping on the hill and sleeping in a nearby town.
Dates and the hilltop venue
The organiser has announced 15–17 July 2027. The festival takes place on Halde Norddeutschland, also called the Dongberg, in Neukirchen-Vluyn. Its travel page identifies the hill near the A57; this is not a central-city concert venue with a railway platform beside the gate.
The official shop lists 2027 admission and parking products. Check each item's year and what it covers. A parking ticket does not make the hill accessible to private cars, and a concert ticket should not be assumed to reserve the parking category your vehicle needs. Flying to Düsseldorf and reaching the hill
Düsseldorf (DUS) is a useful airport to compare for this part of the Lower Rhine. Price the onward journey through the regional transport network or a booked road transfer. The festival's travel page mentions Moers and Duisburg railway stations and warns that the final public-transport connection is not especially convenient.
Check the current journey planner for the day and time you travel; an older route number on the festival page is not enough to establish a usable connection. For a small group, compare a shared station transfer with the combined cost of local fares and a final taxi. Agree whether the driver can reach the authorised drop-off and where you will meet for the return.
Camping means carrying equipment uphill
The currently available FAQ is explicitly for 2026. It describes parking at the foot of the hill, no private-car or campervan access to the top, and an uphill walk or paid shuttle. Those distinctions are valuable planning context, but the shuttle hours and camping opening times must be confirmed for 2027.
Pack so you can manage your own load if the shuttle is busy. A compact tent, a backpack and fewer separate bags are easier to handle than bulky loose equipment. Avoid making a flight connection depend on an immediate downhill ride after packing up. Anyone who needs assisted access should contact the organiser in advance to confirm an appropriate arrangement.
Hotels, campervans and the total cost
Search Neukirchen-Vluyn and Moers first when comparing rooms, then check the actual road journey to the festival approach. A hotel near a station may work well for airport access while leaving a difficult return after the music. Budget for each late-night transfer and confirm reception or key access before choosing a room.
A campervan space at the foot of the hill is a different experience from tent camping above. The older FAQ describes parking without campsite services such as electrical hookups or wastewater facilities. Confirm the 2027 vehicle product before treating it as a serviced campsite, and do not rely on being able to drive supplies up to a tent.
Timing the trip and preparing for the site
A Wednesday arrival may be convenient, but only book it as a campsite arrival after the organiser confirms the opening date. Otherwise, a first night in a nearby town gives a buffer before Thursday's festival. For departure, allow time to pack, descend and reach your onward station or airport; a Sunday room or later connection may be worth the extra cost.
Keep footwear, rain protection and hearing protection easy to reach. The hilltop setting makes a small, practical kit more useful than equipment chosen for a drive-to-pitch field festival. Recheck the current rules on glass, cooking and access when the 2027 FAQ appears. Final shuttle arrangements, parking directions and campsite hours should come from that edition's instructions.
