When to go: the music calendar
- Fuji Rock Festival — July 24–26, 2026, at the Naeba Ski Resort in Niigata (about two hours from Tokyo, not at Mt. Fuji). Japan’s biggest and most scenic festival — a mountain setting, all-night stages, and a legendary atmosphere.
- Summer Sonic — August 14–16, 2026, at ZOZO Marine Stadium & Makuhari Messe in Chiba, just outside Tokyo (the festival also runs simultaneously in Osaka). A city festival you can do as day trips while sleeping in Tokyo.
- Year-round clubbing — Shibuya (Womb and others) and Shinjuku run every weekend, all year.
Summer is festival season but also hot and humid. Spring (cherry blossom, late March–April) and autumn (October–November) are the most comfortable times to visit if you’re coming for the city and clubs rather than a specific festival.
Getting there: flights to Tokyo (HND / NRT)
Tokyo has two airports: Haneda (HND), closer to the city and usually more convenient, and Narita (NRT), farther out but often cheaper on long-haul fares. Search both — the price gap can be large.
Long-haul fares to Japan move a lot, so set a price watch early and book on a dip rather than waiting.

Where to stay (matched to your trip)
- Shibuya — best for nightlife and clubs; you’re in the centre of the action and walkable to late-night spots.
- Shinjuku — huge transport hub (great for day trips to Summer Sonic and the Fuji Rock shinkansen), endless food and bars, the Golden Gai and Kabukicho nightlife.
- Ebisu / Naka-Meguro — slightly calmer but still central and stylish, good for a mix of nightlife and good food.
- For Fuji Rock — either camp on-site, or book a room near Echigo-Yuzawa station (the shinkansen stop with festival shuttle buses). These sell out early.
Getting to the festivals
- Fuji Rock (Naeba): take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa (about 75–90 minutes), then a festival shuttle bus (~40 min) to Naeba. Most people either camp or stay in Yuzawa and shuttle in daily. Book trains and rooms well ahead.
- Summer Sonic (Chiba): regular trains from central Tokyo to the Kaihimmakuhari area take roughly 30–45 minutes, so you can stay in Tokyo and treat it as a day trip.
Getting around Tokyo
Tokyo’s rail and metro network is vast, punctual, and the only sensible way to travel. Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card (or the mobile version) and tap through every gate — far easier than buying individual tickets. The JR Yamanote line loops the major districts. Taxis are excellent but expensive; you won’t need one much. You do not want a rental car in Tokyo — parking and traffic make it pointless.

Money-saving tips
- Compare HND vs. NRT fares — the difference can outweigh the extra transfer time from Narita.
- Eat at conveyor sushi, ramen shops, and convenience stores — excellent food for very little; save the splurge for one special meal.
- Use a Suica/Pasmo card and skip the tourist rail passes unless you’re doing lots of long-distance travel.
- For Fuji Rock, decide early between camping vs. an Echigo-Yuzawa room — both sell out months ahead.
- Buy festival tickets in the early tier; Japanese festivals price up as the date nears.
